I didn’t know anything about the Peace Corp growing up until I was in college. My boyfriend at the time had a huge desire to go into the Peace Corp for two years after our graduation. I was stumped for many reasons but did not want to stop him from this experience even though I didn’t know a lot about the program.
After he left and I started my career we conversed via letter writing. Now I’m aging myself as there was no email, cell phones, or texting. We would go weeks or months before we heard from each other. I would get long letters describing his amazing experiences. As hard as it was on our relationship I loved hearing about his stories in a completely different culture. He really seemed to make changes in the villages he lived in Honduras.
If I knew then what I know now – I would have wanted to be part of this organization. To see how this program has developed I can only image how many young people have helped others around the world. What an experience that must have been.
