Over the weekend I visited my extended family outside of Seattle – during the weekend my brother-in-law Pete was able to Skype with us from Afghanistan. It was great to see him, talk with him and to watch his family gather around the computer to have a conversation. We laughed and we caught up. We also got to hear that he’s coming home within the next two weeks.
My father is a World War II Veteran. He speaks about the times he would write home and how long it would take. He also talks about the times he would try to contact his best friend on the same island and how long it took. There were no phones, no computers - just letter writing and a long time in between hearing back from family.
It was amazing to watch the kids chat and laugh with their dad. Although technology sometimes seems a little intimidating and overexposed at times, I was taken back at how far we have come. We have come to a place where a little boy can see his father on the other side of the world and know that things are ok and daddy will be home soon!
